Eldercare Quest

2025 Green: ~11,000 miles visiting senior living communities, Peach: not visited yet

2026 updates coming soon! Another 10k of travel and learning across the U.S. and Canada.

Eldercare Quest is an ongoing journey to discover and share the ideas that help older adults live with greater dignity, purpose, and fulfillment.

Across senior living communities of every size and model, and through conversations with residents, families, caregivers, and leaders, we're seeking out the practices that are making a real difference. Some are innovative. Others are remarkably simple. All are worth sharing.

Our belief is simple: every community has something to teach. By celebrating what's working and sharing practical ideas that others can adapt, we can help strengthen senior living, support those caring for loved ones at home, and inspire meaningful change across aging services.

What We're Looking For

  • Person-directed living in action

  • Empowered residents and engaged teams

  • Creative, practical ideas that improve daily life

  • Innovations that can be adapted by others

  • Stories that deserve to be celebrated

Questions Guiding the Journey

  • What's already working and why?

  • How can we help older adults experience greater dignity, purpose and fulfillment?

  • Which everyday practices have the greatest impact?

  • What ideas can others learn from and adapt?

Eldercare Quest #1: The Journey Begins!

Hi, I’m Barb Infante with Agile Aging, where we focus on improving nursing homes and long-term care through process excellence and shared learning. 🚐 Welcome to Day 1 of Eldercare Quest 2025! This 10,000-mile journey is all about visiting care facilities across the U.S. to discover and share innovative ideas that can transform eldercare.

Today started early on the East Coast with plans to head through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, but severe winter storms forced a major route change. ❄️ Now, after covering over 500 miles, I’m safely in snowy Virginia and ready to continue the adventure.

Join me as I explore care communities, meet amazing people, and highlight practices we can all learn from. Let’s spark a national conversation about improving care for our loved ones. 💙 Don’t forget to follow along, share your thoughts, and join the movement!

Hi everyone! Today, I covered 360 miles and visited three inspiring eldercare homes in Tennessee, ending the day in vibrant Nashville. 🎸 Along the way, I’ve been gathering incredible ideas and stories that highlight the creativity and care happening in eldercare. With storms in Kansas forcing a route adjustment, I’m reminded that flexibility is key on this journey. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue westward! 🚗🐾

Greetings from Washita Battlefield National Historic Site! 🏞️✨ On Day 4 of my journey, I’ve had the chance to soak in the beauty and history of this remarkable place. Eldercare Quest #5: Snow in Texas, Interstate Shut Down

Day 5 of the journey brought an unexpected challenge as a major snowstorm halted progress in Amarillo, Texas. While waiting out the storm, I’ve been reflecting on insights shared by senior living professionals and thinking about how to better communicate our mission. Sometimes the journey pauses, but the learning continues. Stay tuned for updates as the adventure unfolds!

Eldercare Quest #6: Locked In & Thawing Out

The snowstorm in Amarillo, Texas, continues to delay the journey as high winds and freezing temperatures created challenging conditions. After waking to a frozen door, I had to use an electric heater to thaw the lock and clear the snow drift outside the camper. With the interstate still closed, I’m waiting for safer conditions to resume traveling.

Eldercare Quest #7: Animal Comforts

In senior living communities, animals like cats, birds, and fish are providing residents with joy and fulfillment. These interactions offer companionship and opportunities for mindfulness, fostering a deeper sense of connection and well-being. Simple acts of animal therapy are making a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

Eldercare Quest #8: Birthday Joy

Hello from Lake Havasu, Arizona—where there’s a lake in the middle of the desert! Today’s focus is on bringing back birthday joy for seniors on soft diets. By creating festive, pre-prepared desserts like whipped treats with candles, we can ensure that every birthday feels special and dignified.

Eldercare Quest #9: Memory Boxes

Lake Havasu City, Arizona—home of the historic London Bridge! Today’s topic is Memory Boxes, a meaningful tool for seniors in assisted living, memory care, or at home. These personalized collections spark joy, strengthen identity, and support cognitive health, making transitions easier and more comforting.

Eldercare Quest #10: Outdoor Spaces

Made it to California and reached the 3,100-mile mark of my journey, appreciating the beauty of outdoor spaces in senior living communities. From gazebos to basketball hoops, these thoughtful environments highlight the importance of access to nature for joy and well-being in eldercare settings.

Eldercare Quest #11: Volunteers

Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents in senior living communities. From leading activities to offering companionship, their time and presence help combat loneliness and foster meaningful connections, making a lasting impact on both residents and the community.

Eldercare Quest #12: Ageless Art

While visiting the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site in Gila Bend, AZ, I was struck by the timeless beauty of art created over 12,000 years ago. It reminded me of a wonderful Paint & Sip activity in a senior living community, where residents created stunning watercolors that celebrated the joy of creativity and lifelong learning.

Eldercare Quest #13: Small Home Model

During my visit to a small home senior living community, I witnessed residents and care partners sharing meals, laughter, and heartfelt connections in a cozy, family-like setting. The care partners’ genuine joy and dedication to treating residents like family left a lasting impression on me.

Eldercare Quest #14: Mobility Equipment

Hiking the Grand Canyon made me reflect on mobility challenges and how difficult it can be to buy or sell used mobility equipment without a license. Too often, these essential tools go to waste instead of reaching those who need them most. I’ve had two personal experiences where this was a challenge—if there’s a better way to ensure these items find the right home, I’d love to hear about it.

Eldercare Quest #15: The Wisdom of the Saguaro

Visiting Saguaro National Park, I was struck by how these towering cacti thrive through resilience and adaptation—much like senior living communities that continuously improve their processes to better serve residents. At Agile Aging, we help communities enhance efficiency, consistency, and overall care quality through thoughtful process improvements. Whether in daily operations or long-term planning, small changes can make a big impact.

Eldercare Quest #16: Homes that Feel like a Home (Calm)

In the heart of New Mexico, White Sands National Park offers a peaceful, otherworldly landscape that feels like a beach in the desert. This serene environment is a reminder of the importance of calm and dignity in senior living communities—where respect, quiet, and a true sense of home make all the difference. Too many facilities are filled with unnecessary noise and disruptions, but the best ones prioritize comfort and well-being, allowing residents to rest and live with dignity.

Eldercare Quest #17: Music, Aliens, and Thriving Seniors!

In Roswell, New Mexico, home of the International UFO Museum, I encountered something just as surprising as the stories of the 1947 crash—a live rock band in a senior living community. Residents, both on their feet and in wheelchairs, were dancing and fully immersed in the music, proving that joy and energy have no age limit. In another community, five pianos filled the space with beautiful melodies, highlighting how music continues to inspire and connect people at every stage of life.

Eldercare Quest #18: Finding Green in Winter

Driving across the southern plains in winter, the landscape is a little brown—but it has me thinking about the beautiful green spaces I’ve seen in senior living communities.

Eldercare Quest #19: Buc-ee’s

Buc-ee’s is more than just a gas station—it’s a full experience with fresh barbecue, house-made beef jerky, and an entire sweets bar. It reminded me of the incredible outings I’ve seen in senior living, from trips to Disney to spontaneous music-filled bus rides. These experiences bring joy and connection, reinforcing the power of adventure at any age. What are some of the best outings you’ve seen in senior communities?

Eldercare Quest #20: Crossing the Mississippi

We’ve reached the Mississippi River, marking 6,000 miles on this journey to explore the best in eldercare across the country. From New Jersey to San Diego and now heading back east, I’ve met incredible people and seen inspiring innovations in senior living. With about 1,500 miles to go, I look forward to sharing more of what I’ve learned in the weeks ahead.

Eldercare Quest #21: Innovation & History in Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tennessee, offers a mix of history and innovation in senior living. From pet-friendly communities and art studios to horticultural spaces where residents create their own bouquets, these homes provide unique and meaningful experiences. Virtual programming also extends their impact beyond the community, showcasing new ways to engage and connect.

Eldercare Quest #22: Coast to Coast & Back Again!

Part one of Eldercare Quest 2025 is complete after 7,300 miles across 16 states, visiting dozens of senior living communities. We saw inspiring caregiving and innovative practices, but also encountered senior living deserts where options are limited, and some facilities faced serious challenges. As we plan the next steps, we’ll continue sharing insights, highlighting best practices, and advocating for better eldercare nationwide.

Eldercare Quest #23: Trials and Tribulations of Camping Across the Country

Traveling across the country in my NuCamp Tab 320 Clamshell has been an adventure, with both challenges and rewarding moments. Early on, my heater failed, but thanks to Blue Compass RV, I was able to get it checked for a propane leak. An unexpected ice storm even trapped me inside the camper, but the journey has been worth it—meeting incredible people, seeing senior living communities in action, and receiving heartwarming videos of seniors learning, living, and thriving.

Eldercare Quest #24: Resident-Led Activities

Seniors bring a lifetime of experience into their communities, and when they lead activities, it fosters purpose, joy, and connection. From art and Bible study to grief-sharing groups and making sandwiches for a sports team, these resident-led initiatives create meaningful engagement. Encouraging seniors to share their talents enriches the entire community.

Eldercare Quest #26: Highlights So Far

The first leg of Eldercare Quest 2025 has been an incredible journey, filled with inspiring senior living communities and breathtaking landscapes. From Montezuma’s Castle and White Sands National Park to the Grand Canyon and the California coast, we’ve explored both innovative eldercare practices and the beauty of the road. Along the way, we’ve met wonderful people, reconnected with old friends, and seen firsthand how small changes—like excellent lighting, green sunrooms, and person-directed care—can transform senior living. More to come as the journey continues. Stay tuned!

Eldercare Quest #27: The Power of Choice

At the Altoona, Pennsylvania RV Show, the abundance of choices sparked a reflection on decision-making in senior living. From meal times to clothing, social interactions, and daily routines, how much autonomy do seniors truly have? Innovative senior living communities are finding ways to empower residents with more choices—what examples have you seen that stand out?

Eldercare Quest #28: The Power of Art

Artwork in senior living communities is more than decoration—it serves as a tool for way-finding, calming, and enhancing well-being. Thoughtful environmental design incorporates colors, textures, and nature-inspired imagery to create spaces that feel welcoming and familiar. From large murals that transform hallways to delicate floral arrangements that brighten dining areas, art plays a vital role in bringing joy and comfort to residents.

Eldercare Quest #29: Push-Button Comfort & Safety

In some senior living communities, residents are using push-button pendants—not just for emergencies, but to request everyday assistance like a glass of water or help getting to lunch. These communities track response times and, in some cases, publicly share the data to ensure accountability and peace of mind for families. This simple technology enhances safety, dignity, and resident engagement, setting a standard that more homes should follow.

Eldercare Quest #30: The Power of Values

During a visit to Princeton, I was reminded of the importance of strong, visible values—not just in education, but in senior living communities. Some homes prominently display their commitment to resident-centered care, but one stood out by also sharing health-related metrics, demonstrating the impact of wellness on aging. Transparency in values and health outcomes can help shape more consistent, high-quality care for older adults.

Eldercare Quest #31: The Eden Alternative

Person-directed care transforms senior living, and the Eden Alternative is leading the way. By focusing on eradicating loneliness, helplessness, and boredom, they empower residents with voice and choice in their daily lives. This approach helps individuals retain identity, autonomy, and joy, ensuring that aging remains a time of growth and meaningful connection.

Eldercare Quest #32: Process Improvement Playground

Playground safety has come a long way since the 70s and 80s—and it’s a great reminder of the power of process improvement. In senior living, real progress starts with listening to residents, families, and staff. Communities that ask for feedback and act on it are the ones that truly grow and adapt.

Eldercare Quest #37 - Gardening and Outdoor Access

Many nursing homes lack easy access to the outdoors, yet time in nature can bring tremendous benefits for residents. Raised garden beds, sunrooms filled with light, and views of wildlife in rural settings all provide opportunities for connection, joy, and well-being. Outdoor access remains an important factor in creating a truly supportive eldercare environment.

Eldercare Quest #38 - The Final 3,000 Miles

We are back on the road, traveling across the country to visit nursing homes, assisted living, and memory care communities. Our goal is to highlight the good things happening in eldercare, learn from inspiring teams and residents, and share what works to help make aging better.

Eldercare Quest #39 - Homes that Feel Like a Home

I recently visited a beautifully restored Victorian home from the 1800s that now serves as a non-profit assisted living community. With original woodwork, a welcoming veranda swing, and close proximity to town, it offers residents both historic charm and connection to community life. This unique setting truly feels like home.

Eldercare Quest #40 - Resident Artwork

A recent visit to a remodeled nursing home revealed how small design choices—like displaying resident artwork on the refrigerator—can bring a true sense of home. These simple, personal touches foster warmth, familiarity, and belonging for those who’ve given up so much to be there.

Eldercare Quest #41 - Art, Purpose and Giving Back

At a recent visit to a senior living community, I discovered a vibrant art room, pottery studio, and sewing space where residents create, sell, and donate their work. From handmade quilts to donated teddy bears, these creative outlets foster purpose, community connection, and a renewed sense of meaning in later life.

Eldercare Quest #42 - Wild Karaoke Fun

During a visit to Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes, I was reminded of the power of music and expression in later life. One senior woman, leaning on her walker, proudly shared that she had just performed Elvis’s “Hound Dog,” and the joy on her face said it all. Karaoke isn’t just entertainment — it’s a way for older adults to feel vibrant, connected, and alive.

Eldercare Quest #43 - Person-Centered Journey

Explore a community’s inspiring shift from institutional senior living to a person-centered model. By redesigning their space into small neighborhoods and empowering staff to take on versatile roles, they’ve created a culture where residents are treated like family. This transformation has led to stronger relationships, improved staff retention, and more meaningful care.

Eldercare Quest #44 - Sanctuary for the Ages

While searching for ancient Petoskey stones in Michigan, I discovered something equally rare in eldercare—a senior living community built around a Gothic-style church from 1919. This fully restored sanctuary offers residents weekly services, spiritual continuity, and a deep sense of belonging. It’s a powerful example of how history and care can coexist beautifully.

Eldercare Quest #45: Meals that Matter

We found a simple yet powerful program that brings joy to senior living residents. Each month, residents submit and vote on their favorite family recipes, with the winning dish featured on the menu. It’s a meaningful way to honor personal history and create connection through food.

Eldercare Quest #46: Bang, Clang, Smile: Music Therapy in Motion

We found a creative outlet for residents through a wall of hanging pots and pans. This playful setup encourages healthy expression, whether through gentle rhythms or energetic release. It’s a simple yet powerful way to bring joy and emotional wellness into daily life.

Eldercare Quest #47: A Room for Loved Ones

Here we highlight a senior living community offering a hotel-style guest room for visiting family and friends—completely free of charge. This simple yet impactful idea removes financial barriers and makes meaningful connection more accessible. It’s a thoughtful way to support relationships and honor the importance of being together.

Eldercare Quest #48: Magical Spaces

This week, I met an architect whose work is transforming senior living communities across the country. From reimagining large institutional buildings to creatively remodeling older homes, her designs bring warmth, light, and a true sense of home to every space. These projects remind us that thoughtful design can profoundly shape how we live and age.

Eldercare Quest #49: Welcoming Entry Ways

The first moments you enter a senior living community set the tone for the entire experience. Some entries feel confusing or impersonal, while others welcome you with warm, attentive staff and thoughtful design. Small home models within larger structures often use familiar elements like front doors and siding to create a true “home” feeling right from the elevator.

Eldercare Quest #50: 100 Years of Stories

“100 Years of Stories,” featuring Talegate4Joy — a project that takes centenarians on car rides to share their life memories. Even those with memory challenges recall vivid moments from long ago, offering families new glimpses into their loved ones’ pasts. Sometimes, the greatest act of care is simply listening.

Eldercare Quest #51: Memory Care, Full of Life and Love

A vibrant space where every resident has a cozy bedroom, access to comforting animals, and activities that spark joy—gardening 🌿, baking 🍪 and more. This incredible community just won Best Memory Care - again! 🏆

Eldercare Quest #52: Joy & Spontaneity

Sometimes happiness comes in the simplest ways. A resident’s delight at seeing a camper reminded us how small surprises can spark big smiles. Moments like these show the power of being present and sharing joy.

Eldercare Quest #53: Cycling Without Age

Imagine seniors feeling the wind in their hair as they cycle through beautiful landscapes. This global movement is redefining aging by bringing joy, freedom, and connection to older adults everywhere.

Eldercare Quest #54: The Tenure Test

Asking one simple question—“How long have you worked here?”—can reveal a lot about a senior living community. Longevity often signals strong leadership, a positive culture, and a commitment to quality care. It’s a powerful indicator when choosing a home for a loved one.

Eldercare Quest #55: Leading Age

Welcome to the national LeadingAge conference, where thousands gathered to strengthen senior living. The event showcased real solutions and compassion, pointing toward a future of dignity and connection. In 2026, the movement continues in Philadelphia.

Eldercare Quest #56: Reality Check – What Would You Have Said?

Senior living decisions aren’t always straightforward. When someone praises a community you know isn’t ideal, how do you respond? These moments remind us that honesty and empathy matter in guiding loved ones toward the right care.

Eldercare Quest #57: From Empty Fences to a Thriving Horse Community

At one senior living community, a resident transformed an empty fenced area into a thriving on-site horse program, complete with viewing spaces and educational tours. What began as one person’s vision now enriches daily life for the entire community. It’s a powerful reminder that purpose, leadership, and contribution continue at every stage of life.

Eldercare Quest #58: Smart Tech, Better Care

Technology is quietly reshaping senior living. From sleep sensors to pattern detection, communities are reducing falls by up to 60%, giving families peace of mind and staff better tools. Small insights are making a big difference in eldercare.

Eldercare Quest #59: Autonomy

Person-centered care begins with choice, yet in many communities, daily routines are still driven by fixed schedules rather than individual preferences. Simple decisions—when to wake, what to wear, or how to receive care—can significantly impact dignity and independence. Even offering small choices can transform the resident experience and bring care closer to its intended purpose.

Eldercare Quest #60: Respite for All

I recently visited a dementia respite program built on the Respite for All model, and it was filled with laughter, movement, connection, and genuine joy. Everyone was treated as a “friend,” and the sense of belonging was palpable — reminding me how powerful community, dignity, and shared experience can be at any stage of life.

Eldercare Quest #61: 20 Year Wait List?

Community and contribution are powerful. What if that were the offering at a senior home, rather than passive care. With decades-long waitlists and a culture of deep engagement, it challenges traditional models and redefines what aging well can look like. The result is a community where purpose, connection, and belonging drive everything.

Eldercare Quest #62: There Has To Be A Better Way To Age Well

This August, conversations in Denver will focus on a bold question: how can we create a better way to age? Leaders and innovators across senior living, caregiving, technology, and longevity will come together to explore healthier aging, the role of AI in supporting older adults, and a more connected aging ecosystem.

The event brings together people who believe aging should be centered on dignity, purpose, and quality of life for every stage of life.

Eldercare Quest #63: Escapees Care

CARE in Livingston, Texas may be one of the most unique senior living communities in the country — blending the feel of a campground with the support services older adults need to remain independent. This nonprofit community provides meals, transportation, wellness support, activities, and compassionate volunteer-driven care in an environment residents truly call home.

From residents in their 90s to volunteers who become like family, CARE is redefining what aging with dignity and independence can look like.

Eldercare Quest #64: Stairs in senior living?

Senior living communities continue to challenge many of my assumptions during Eldercare Quest. One surprising example: stairs in Independent and Assisted Living settings. Many professionals shared that maintaining movement and mobility can play an important role in preserving independence and overall health as we age.

Eldercare Quest #65: Retired and feeling lost?

This week, we explored an often-overlooked challenge in retirement and aging: loss of purpose and social isolation. One of the most meaningful solutions we’ve seen is simple human connection through volunteering, visiting seniors, and building community across generations. Small moments of presence and conversation can have a lasting impact — for both seniors and volunteers alike.

Eldercare Quest #66: The Golden Boutique

The Golden Boutique is bringing a thoughtful, mobile shopping experience directly into senior living communities, helping residents rediscover choice, comfort, and personal style. Founded by experienced caregivers, the initiative addresses a real need for clothing that supports both dignity and individuality. More than retail, it creates meaningful moments of connection, confidence, and joy.

Eldercare Quest #67: Goddess Photoshoots

This week we highlighted a photography project celebrating women over 70 through “goddess-inspired” portraits. What began as a personal project during COVID evolved into a powerful reminder that aging can still be joyful, expressive, creative, and deeply beautiful.

Eldercare Quest #68: Food Matters

This week we explored how important meals truly are in senior living communities. Food is far more than nutrition — it creates routine, connection, comfort, and emotional ties to family memories and home.

Eldercare Quest #69: Talking about LIFE! Starting a Newspaper

This week we highlighted a senior living community where residents created their own weekly newspaper. What began as a simple activity evolved into something much bigger — building stronger connections, encouraging purpose, and helping residents focus more on life, stories, and community.

Eldercare Quest #70: A school in a nursing home

This week we explored an intergenerational senior living model where an entire sixth-grade class spends the school year inside a senior community. The relationships formed between students and residents are creating deeper connection, purpose, empathy, and community for everyone involved.

Eldercare Quest #71: These products exist?

Technology for older adults is evolving rapidly, from smart home tools and wearable safety devices to mobility innovations and even robotic assistants. While some of these products seem futuristic, many are already helping older adults maintain independence, reduce frustration, and stay connected to the people around them.

Eldercare Quest #72: Robot Museum Tours

This week we explored how museums are using telepresence robots to help homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities virtually experience exhibits in real time. These technologies are creating new opportunities for accessibility, connection, and continued engagement with the world.
